It was, as it had been for much of the way across France and Germany, a race to capture a crucial bridge before retreating German units got safely to the other side and blew it up in the faces of the oncoming Americans. Under its commanding officer, BG Charles H. Karlstad, CCA moved quickly towards Moosburg.

Total strength of the command was about 1, men, including support units. With only one company of infantry at its disposal, the combat command was significantly understrength in infantry.

The combat command advanced nearly fifty miles on 28 April, against sporadic resistance. CCA Headquarters settled in for the night at Puttenhausen at hours.

Stalag VII-A

The entry into Mauren had not been an easy one. Just before midnight, the infantry went in ahead of the tanks to clear the town, and were ambushed by SS soldiers using machine guns and automatic antiaircraft guns.

The enemy resistance was eliminated in a short but intense fire fight. B AIB lost several men before the town was finally secured. See map above. During the early morning hours of the 29 April, a car approached a roadblock on the southeast side of Mauern from the direction of Moosburg. The car was not fired on as it was seen to be flying a white flag. In the car were four men who asked to speak with a senior officer. Lann, the commanding officer of the 47th Tank Battalion.

He was captured on 13 June during fighting around Carentan. The SS major carried a written proposal from the area commander, which he was to present to the commanding officer of the American force. Lann went in, leaving the delegates to wait outside.

The task of the committee was to prepare and undertake a mass escape of prisoners of war. Bushell was chosen to be the commander.

One of the most important and difficult tasks was to camouflage the entrances to the tunnels. The two tunnels were to be built towards the west. The tunnel was to be built towards the north. After they managed to get through the layer of concrete and bricks, the digging of three shafts was started. Despite the structure of the soil bright yellow sand they managed to achieve the depth of 9 meters.

The walls of the shafts and ladders were covered with bed planks. Under the entrance of the shaft three little rooms were bulit, which were used for storing the air pump, dugged yellow sand, sacks for carring the sand out, and all the tools, lamps and wooden planks.

The air pump was made of a long wooden bed with a tube bellows made of impregnated tarpaulin. The tube was made of sacks used for carring clothes and wire that made it stiff. It was closed at both the ends with wooden lids with automatic valves. The inlet and outlet valves sucked in and pressed the air into the pipes. Te pipes were made of empty milk cans called Klim.

The cans were made in such a way that after the bottom was cut out and the lid was opened it was possible to join them with one another. They were air-tighted with thick paper and burried in the tunnel floor. The used air was pressed to chimneys and the fresh air inlet was hidden under the floor. The prisoner who was responsible for operating the pump had an important task, though. The railway along which tunnel carriages were moved was made of skirting-board taken from prisoners rooms. The carriages were made of wooden planks and the weels consisted of three rings. The camp covered an area of 35 hectares 86 acres.

It served also as a transit camp through which prisoners, including officers, were processed on their way to other camps.

At some time during the war, prisoners from every nation fighting against Germany passed through it. At the time of its liberation on 29 Aprilthere were 76, prisoners in the main camp and 40, or more in Arbeitskommando working in factories, repairing railroads or on farms.

The camp was opened in September [4] and was designed to house up to 10, Polish prisoners from the German September offensive. The first prisoners arrived while the wooden barracks were under construction and for several weeks lived in tents.

BritishFrenchBelgian and Dutch soldiers taken prisoner during the Battle of France started arriving in May A few months later Soviet prisoners started arriving, mostly officers. At the end of the war there were 27 Soviet generals in the prison. More British Commonwealth and Polish prisoners came from the North African campaign and the offensive against the Italian-held islands in the Mediterranean.

They were brought from Italian POW camps after the Armistice with Italy in Septemberincluding many who escaped at that time and were recaptured. Italian soldiers were also imprisoned. Large numbers of Americans were captured in the Battle of the Bulge in December They were followed by more prisoners marched from other camps threatened by the advancing Soviets, including American officers who had been marched from Oflag 64 in Szubinvia Oflag XIII-Bunder their senior officer Lt.

Paul Goode. They were buried in a cemetery in Oberreit, south of Moosburg. Most died from illness, some from injuries during work. A German proposal for an armistice was rejected, followed by a short, uneven battle between the American tanks and retreating German soldiers for control of bridges across the Amper and Isar rivers.

The American force learned of the existence of the camp and its approximate location only a few hours before the attack. Later the camp was turned into a new district of the town called Moosburg-Neustadt.

It is a fountain located in the center of Neustadt. It consists of four bas-reliefs created out of local stone by the French sculptor Antoniucci Volti while he was a prisoner in the camp. In the Oberreit cemetery was closed. In the Moosburg City Council purchased a plot at the site of the old Oberreit cemetery and erected a wooden cross with a simple stone remembering the dead of Stalag VII-A.

It was a nest of small compounds separated by barbed wire fences enclosing old, dilapidated barracks crammed closely together. Reportedly, the camp had been built to hold 14, French prisoners.

In the end,POWs of all nationalities and ranks were confined in the area. In some compounds the barracks were empty shells with dirt floors.

In others, barracks consisted of two wooden buildings abutting a masonry washroom with a few cold-water faucets. Wooden bunks were joined together into blocks of 12, a method of cramming men into a building originally intended for an uncomfortable All buildings were hopelessly infested with vermin. As spring came to Bavaria, some of the more enterprising Kriegies moved out of the barracks into tents that had been erected to accommodate the stream of newcomers still coming in from other evacuated stalags.

Some men chose to sleep on the ground, setting up quarters in air raid slit trenches. The camp resembled a giant hobo village.
